🎄 Kids’ Nail Appointments: What You Need to Know

Helloooo!

With Christmas and school holidays coming up, we know your schedules are about to get packed! And with all the festive buzz, parents will be booking in treats for their kids, hoping for a little holiday sparkle.

Before the rush hits, let’s chat about why having a clear kids’ nail policy is so important.

Here’s the Scoop on Kids’ Nails –

Kids’ nails might look like mini versions of ours, but they’re not! They’re softer, thinner, and way more sensitive. Prepping and removing gels or enhancements on them can lead to damage that sticks around for life. We’re talking permanent changes like –

  • Nails that grow with ridges or even split in two 😬
  • Increased sensitivity and heat spikes (and kids rarely speak up when it stings!)
  • Onycholysis from picking or poorly handled removals

Even if a product claims to be ‘safe for kids’, the issue isn’t the gel itself – it’s the buffing, cuticle work, shaping, and then the removal (which let’s be honest, best case involves 15 minutes of acetone exposure, likely case involves the kid picking it off) that isn’t worth the risk. If you do less prep, the gel doesn’t stick as well and comes off causing damage anyway.

Our Holiday Policy for Kiddos –

  • Under 12s: Stick to classic polish. Keep it fun and simple with no shaping, buffing, or cuticle work. It’s perfect for little fingers and still feels super special!
  • Ages 12-16: If parents insist, gel polish could be an option, but only if a removal appointment is prepaid. No shortcuts here – safety first!
  • 16 and Up: Chat with them about what’s involved in maintaining enhancements. If it’s for a one-off event like a school ball, bundle the removal cost and book both appointments upfront.

Communicating Your Policy –

Let’s face it, sometimes clients push back. If someone questions why you don’t offer gels or enhancements for younger kids, stand your ground. Be friendly but firm – explain that protecting young nails is your priority, and knowing what you’re risking on behalf of a child isn’t something you’re comfortable with.

Why It Matters –

Turning down a service isn’t about being difficult – it’s about keeping our industry safe and respected. Plus, when you educate clients about why you have these rules, they trust you more and are likely to stick around.

So, before the holiday chaos kicks off, take a moment to fine-tune your ‘Services for Children’ policy. Put it on your socials (even just as a caption intended to educate, that’s how I do mine), add it to your website, and chat it up with parents in the salon. Let’s head into this season confident in where we stand, and ready to provide amazing, safe services!

Keep those standards high! 🌟

This is what else we loved last week –

  1. Personality quizzes (a la Cosmo in the 90s) that we can pass off as legitimate very important work.
  2. Knowing it’s not ‘just us’ dealing with overwhelm.
  3. Self promo lol – this INCREDIBLE testimonial from Emma Fraser
  4. Well, not complainers, but you guys definitely loved this reel haha
  5. Being a dinosaur
