Kia ora, I’m Caiti – founder of Prim Improper and now a proud training partner with Monaco Nail Academy. I grew up as free-range as they come in the Far North, Ahipara. School was never really my jam, so I dropped out at 13 to live my best life. Fast forward a bit and, somehow, I ended up with a degree in criminology and education. For the first 12 years of my career I worked in social services: youth justice, foster care, teaching in prison, and as a therapist in a residential drug and alcohol rehab.
Then my nana, my best friend and biggest cheerleader, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She needed 24-hour care, so I handed in my notice and moved in with her. Those years were some of the hardest and most beautiful of my life. Soon after, I began studying with Monaco, and a whole new world of creativity and community opened up to me. Nail art became my outlet, my therapy, and my joy. Nana was always down to let me experiment on her, proudly rocking everything from delicate florals and glitter to highly questionable mustard marble. She convinced me that I was the most capable, talented person on Earth.
When she passed, I knew I had to go all-in on this passion. That’s how Prim Improper was born – a brand built on aroha, integrity, and unapologetic self-expression. We don’t follow trends, we follow truth: designs that are personal, powerful, and authentic.
Why train with me? Because I know what it’s like to start from scratch, to feel unsure of yourself, to mess up, and to wonder if you’ll ever “get it.” I’ve been there, and I know how tough that can be. What I’ve learned is that the real progress comes when you stop chasing perfection and start backing yourself. That’s when your confidence grows, your creativity opens up, and your self-expression shines through – and that’s exactly what I want to help you tap into.
With me, you’ll learn practical skills, but also how to connect with your own style and bring it into your work. I’m here to encourage you, support your growth, and remind you to enjoy the process. Because when you feel confident and creative, clients feel it too – and that’s what helps your artistry evolve and your business thrive.
Outside of nails, I’m a massive bookworm and a bit of a quantum physics nerd. When I’m not working, you’ll find me binge-watching Gaia, scouring op shops, or exploring hidden beaches and bush tracks (book in hand of course).
