You should read our ‘Everything You Need to Know’ series if:
– you are or want to be a nail tech
– you’re not sure what services to learn / offer
Each post in the series goes over specific nail technology, what they are, how they work, some considerations and also pro tips, so you can decide if you should be offering the service in your salon.
(If you do decide you want to learn something nail-related, just remember we’re a pretty great nail academy!)
This post in our series is about using E-files.
What Is E-Filing?
E-filing involves using an electric nail file, or E-file, for completing nail services. Using the appropriate ‘drill’ bit, an E-file can be used for shaping, smoothing, and removing nail products more efficiently than manual filing.
How Does It Work?
- Product Removal: E-files can be used to remove gel, acrylic, or dip powder quickly and efficiently.
- Refining Structure: E-files can also be used to shape and refine nail structure.
- Cuticle Care: With training, you can also use an E-file to carefully clean the cuticle area.
Benefits of E-files
- Efficient: E-filing can speed up your service time, so you can see more clients in less time.
- Precise: The variety of bits and adjustable speeds provide greater precision in shaping and refining nails.
- Versatile: E-files can be used for a range of tasks, from bulky product removal to detailed cuticle work.
- High Quality Results: E-filing helps achieve smooth, consistent finishes that can be challenging to achieve with manual filing.
- Reduced Strain: Using an E-file can reduce the physical strain on your hands and wrists compared to manual filing.
What to consider
- Proper Training: It’s essential to receive proper training on e-filing techniques to ensure safe and effective use. You’re basically using a power tool!
- Maintenance: Regularly clean and maintain your e-file and bits to get the best performance and have it last longer.
- Client Comfort: Always check in with your clients to ensure they’re comfortable before you use an e-file and check in while you work too.
- Pick the Right Bit: There are a variety of bits that you can use, so you need to take care and pick the right bit for the job.
- Choose the Right E-File: Make sure to pick an e-file with adjustable speed settings and a comfortable grip. Keep in mind that you may need a left-handed setting or left-handed bits if you’re a leftie!
Well-educated and qualified nail techs like our Monaco students and grads will be able to take these factors into account and keep clients safe.
Pro Tips for Better E-filing
- Practice Makes Perfect: Spend time practicing with different bits and speeds to get comfortable with your E-file.
- Gentle Touch: Use a light touch to avoid over-filing and damaging the natural nail.
- Regular Maintenance: Clean and disinfect your e-file and bits regularly and store them safely to maintain hygiene and performance. Make sure to replace dull bits for safety.
- Keep Moving: Always keep the E-file moving to prevent heat buildup from friction.
