Each post in the series goes over specific nail technology, what they are, how they work, some considerations and also pro tips, so you can decide if you should be offering the service in your salon.

(If you do decide you want to learn something nail-related, just remember we’re a pretty great nail academy!)

This post in our series is about Hard Gel.

What Is Hard Gel?

Hard gel is a type of nail enhancement product that, once cured under a UV or LED light, becomes extremely strong and durable. It’s perfect for creating overlays and extensions and can be shaped and sculpted to achieve various nail designs. It’s an alternative to acrylics (liquid and powder) with similar strength but more flexibility and a glossy finish.

How Does It Work?

  • Preparation: Start by prepping the nails—shape thempush back the cuticles, and lightly buff the surface.
  • Extend: If extensions are desired, apply nail forms or tips to the natural nails and secure them in place.
  • Primer: Get the nail surface ready for best durability by applying primer.
  • Builder Structure: Apply a mapping layer of hard gel and cure it under a UV or LED light. Apply a thin slip layer of hard gel – skip curing. Using a larger bead of hard gel, apply it over the slip layer and allow it to self-level. Then cure.
  • Shaping and Buffing: Once the gel is fully cured, shape and buff the nails to achieve the desired look.
  • Top Coat: Apply a top coat to seal and add shine, then cure again.

Benefits of hard gel

  • Durability: Hard gel is incredibly strong and resilient, making it a great choice for long-lasting nail enhancements.
  • Flexibility: Unlike acrylics, hard gel has a slight flexibility that makes it less likely to crack or break under pressure.
  • Smooth Finish: Hard gel self-levels, creating a smooth and even surface that requires minimal filing and buffing.
  • Odorless Application: Hard gel is odorless, making it a more pleasant option for both you and your clients.

What to look out for

  • Learning Curve: There might be a learning curve to start, but with practice, you’ll be confident.
  • Curing Process: Proper curing is essential to prevent lifting and ensure the gel fully hardens. Always follow your brand’s recommended curing times.
  • Removal: Hard gel must be filed off, as it does not soak off like some other gel products. This requires care to avoid damaging the natural nails.
  • Skill and Practice: Achieving the perfect hard gel application requires skill and practice to master the consistency and application technique.

Well-educated and qualified nail techs like our Monaco students and grads will be able to take these factors into account and keep clients safe.

Pro Tips for Better Hard Gel Manicures

  • Thin Layers: Apply the gel in thin layers to build strength gradually and avoid bulkiness.
  • Control Product Flow: Use a slip layer to guide the hard gel and ensure an even application.
  • Proper Curing: Ensure each layer is fully cured to prevent any issues with adhesion or durability.
  • Gentle Filing: When removing hard gel, use a gentle touch to protect the natural nail underneath.
  • Hydrate: Ask your clients to keep their nails and cuticles hydrated with oils and lotions to maintain nail health between manicures.
