Feeling Discouraged as a Nail Tech Beginner? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Give Up

Take a breath, you’ve got this!

Once upon a time, when I had been doing nails for around 6 or 7 years, a student came to me with a similar concern. We calculated that I had done 265,000 individual nails and she had done 27.

By the sounds of it, you’re at about the same point as her (practice hand doesn’t count! Human body temperature, oil, and moisture content all affect what you do). I’ve been doing nails for 16 years now and couldn’t possibly work out how many I’ve done. But I just want you to recognize HOW new you are.

If it was so easy that you could be great at it after a couple of clients, everyone would be able to do it and our services wouldn’t hold value. From what I can see, you’ve just done your first Traditional Polish group lesson less than a week ago. You haven’t done any for gel.

If I were you, I would book the group lessons first, see how you go, and book one-on-one coaching after that. I mean, you CAN book one-on-one now if you want to, but you need to be kind to yourself and realize you haven’t actually had any lessons yet. If you were good by now, you’d be a prodigy.

Tell people you’re a trainee and need to practice—there’s no embarrassment in that.
