😜 Trying to Please Everyone Will Make You Crazy (And what to do instead)

If your business was actually a person, who would it be?

This is a SUPER powerful marketing tool!

Humour me – What would they look like? How would they act? What would they do when they got home from work each day?

Sound crazy? If The Warehouse was a person, I think you can imagine EXACTLY what he would look like and how he would act. If Gucci was a person, what would they look like and how would they act?

Put Air New Zealand, Jet Star, Virgin and Emirates in a room together. What do they like and dislike about each other? Which one is the class clown? Which one is pouring drinks? Which one is sitting in a corner looking disapprovingly at the ones having fun?

Once you are comfortable personifying brands, personify your own.

The more detailed you go, the better this works. Where do they go on holiday? How do they feel about dogs? Would they wear white to a barbeque?

What would they think if they saw someone wash their hands, then wipe them dry on their shirt even though a hand towel was right next to them?

Half of you just thought ‘Who cares, it’s just a shirt’ and the other half of you thought ‘Ew, that’s disgusting’. And that’s the crux of it all. A real human could not make a decision on how to dry their hands that would align with every other person in the room.

So why are we expecting our business, who, might I add, interacts with REAL HUMANS every day, to please everyone?

When you’re clear on who the business is, it becomes easier to run. Before you walk in the door and met the person who is going to be doing your nails, you already have a feeling of who the salon is. You know from social media, and the way your booking was handled, and the language used in the reminder text, and the logo and the name.

Literally one minute after finishing the draft for this, I went to find a stock image for a social media post. I loved a fun comic book style pop art image but that’s not who Monaco is. We’re pink and gold and soft and light in all of our branding.

And so I chose something completely different, as Monaco.

Tell me (with the Submit button at the bottom) – What will your next choice be?
