Everything You Need To Know About Dipping Systems

You should read our ‘Everything You Need to Know’ series if:
– you are or want to be a nail tech
– you’re not sure what services to learn / offer

Each post in the series goes over specific nail technology, what they are, how they work, some considerations and also pro tips, so you can decide if you should be offering the service in your salon.

(If you do decide you want to learn something nail-related, just remember we’re a pretty great nail academy!)

This post in our series is about Dip.

What Are Dipping Systems?

Dipping systems, often called “dip powder nails” or even SNS (which is a brand of dip), involve using a special powder and a bonding solution to create a long-lasting, durable manicure. This technique is a great alternative to ‘traditional’ products like acrylic and gel polish. You’ll end up with a strong yet lightweight finish.

How Does It Work?

  • Preparation: Start by prepping the nails, just like you would for any other manicure. This includes shaping the nails, pushing back the cuticles, and lightly buffing the surface.
  • Base Coat Application: Apply base coat to one nail at a time.
  • Dipping: While the base coat is still wet, dip the nail into the powder. Tap off any excess powder and repeat the process for each nail.
  • Activating: After all nails are dipped, apply an activator to harden the powder. This step ‘activates’ the durability and strength of the manicure.
  • Shaping and Buffing: After the activator dries, shape and buff the nails to achieve a smooth surface.
  • Top Coat: Finish with a top coat to seal the nails and give them a beautiful, glossy finish.

Benefits of Dip Manicures

  • Durable: Dipping systems can last up to three weeks.
  • Versatile: You can achieve so many looks with dip powders – and they can be the easiest French tips ever.
  • Time-Saving: Once you get the hang of it, applying dip powder can be quicker than using other nail products.

What to Look Out For

  • Learning Curve: There might be a learning curve to start, but with practice, you’ll be so confident.
  • Removal Process: Removing dip powder nails involves soaking in acetone, which can be drying to the nails if not done properly.

A well-educated and qualified nail tech like our Monaco students and grads will be able to take these factors into account and keep clients safe.

Pro Tips for Better Dip Powder Manicures

  • Thin, Even Layers: Apply the dip powder base coat in thin, even layers. You want to avoid a bulky finish and get a smooth application of the powder.
  • Tap Off Excess Powder: After dipping the nails, gently tap off any excess powder before applying the next layer to prevent lumps or uneven coverage.
  • Buff Lightly: Once the dip powder has set, lightly buff the nails to create a smooth surface before applying the top coat. This is for a flawless, glossy finish.
  • Product-Free Lid: Avoid getting dip base coat on the rim of the bottle. You don’t want an unusable bottle because it’s gotten glued shut (Seriously, this happens a lot).
  • Hydrate: Ask your clients to keep their nails and cuticles hydrated with oils and lotions to maintain nail health between manicures.
