You should read our ‘Everything You Need to Know’ series if:
– you are or want to be a nail tech
– you’re not sure what services to learn / offer
Each post in the series goes over specific nail technology, what they are, how they work, some considerations and also pro tips, so you can decide if you should be offering the service in your salon.
(If you do decide you want to learn something nail-related, just remember we’re a pretty great nail academy!)
This post in our series is about PolyGel.
What Is PolyGel?
PolyGel is a hybrid nail enhancement product that combines the best of both acrylic and hard gel – strength and flexibility. It comes in a tube and has a putty-like consistency (so you might hear it being called ‘putty’ too!). That makes it easy to work with and perfect for creating overlays and extensions.
How Does It Work?
- Preparation: Start by prepping the nails—shape them, push back the cuticles, and lightly buff the surface.
- Extend: If extensions are desired, apply nail forms or tips to the natural nails and secure them in place.
- Primer: Get the nail surface ready for best durability by applying primer.
- Base Coat Application: Apply a thin layer of base coat to each nail and cure it under a UV or LED light.
- Applying PolyGel: Use a spatula to place the PolyGel onto the nail. Dip a brush into slip solution and gently pat, smooth and shape the PolyGel into place. Then cure.
- Shaping and Buffing: Once the PolyGel is fully cured, shape and buff the nails to achieve the desired finish.
- Top Coat: Apply a top coat to seal and add shine, then cure again.
Benefits of PolyGel
- Easy Application: PolyGel’s putty-like consistency makes it easy to control and shape – even for beginners!
- Odorless: Unlike acrylics, PolyGel is odorless, providing a more pleasant experience for both you and your clients.
- Lightweight and Strong: PolyGel almost has the strength of acrylics, but it feels more natural and is more flexible.
- Flexible Working Time: PolyGel doesn’t harden until it’s cured under a light, giving you plenty of time to perfect your application.
- Versatility: PolyGel can be used for various nail enhancements, including overlays, extensions, and detailed nail art.
What to look out for
- Learning Curve: There might be a learning curve to start, but with practice, you’ll be confident.
Curing Process: Ensure each layer is fully cured to prevent any issues with adhesion or durability. - Slip Solution: Using the right slip solution helps in smoothly applying and shaping the PolyGel.
- Removal: PolyGel needs to be filed off, similar to hard gel, so be careful to avoid damaging the natural nails.
Well-educated and qualified nail techs like our Monaco students and grads will be able to take these factors into account and keep clients safe.
Pro Tips for better PolyGel manicures
- Thin Layers: Apply PolyGel in thin layers to build up the desired thickness and shape gradually.
- Just Enough Slip Solution: Too much can make the PolyGel too runny. Use just enough to keep your brush from sticking.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Practice with PolyGel to get comfortable with its unique consistency and application method.
- Gentle Filing: When removing PolyGel, file gently to protect the natural nail underneath.
